Esperance Power Project

Our integrated power solution that combines a more efficient power station with a significant increase in renewables.

Project overview

In 2022 the Esperance community welcomed a new, integrated power solution.

Following it’s official opening in May, the renewables hub brings together solar and wind power, to generate up to 46% of Esperance’s electricity. This is a long-term solution delivering cleaner electricity by reducing the carbon footprint and increasing the generation of renewable energy for the community.

Esperance’s new power solution includes:

  • A new central solar farm
  • Two new wind turbines
  • A battery energy storage system
  • A new highly efficient gas power station

Solar and wind power are an ideal way to combine renewable energy sources. During the day, a solar farm captures energy from the sun, and after dark is when the wind farm is most active. Combined, these two energy sources allow electricity to be generated by renewables around the clock.

Driving lower emissions

We delivered a cleaner, renewable, more efficient power supply, aiming for a 50% reduction in community carbon emissions.

That's the equivalent to removing approximately 6,458 cars off the road each year - or almost the equal to the total number of registered motor vehicles in Esperance.

Using the latest energy tech

Wind turbines continue to be an important part of Esperance’s energy mix with the project delivering two new state-of-the-art 185m wind turbines with a combined capacity of 9 megawatts.

The latest design and technology innovations mean these turbines will have more power and higher capacity than ever before, producing 60% more wind power than the combined output of the past wind farms.

This is supported by the projects 4 megawatt solar farm, comprising of more than 8,900 solar panels, and making it the largest solar farm in our renewable energy portfolio to date.

What's happening now?

Shark Lake Renewables Hub formally launched

May 2022
Horizon Power and Pacific Energy were joined by the Premier, Hon Mark McGowan and Minister for Energy, Hon Bill Johnston to formally open the Shark Lake Renewables Hub in Esperance and mark the official completion of the Esperance Power Project.

Operational optimisation

Ongoing
We continue to work collaboratively with Pacific Energy to evolve the efficiency of the project and continue to optimise the renewable energy input to the Esperance network.

What does this mean for the community?

The new Esperance power system has been designed to accommodate new technology to ensure more renewable energy can be added to the system over the life of the assets

Horizon Power has long been at the forefront of renewable technology, and we are committed to continue this tradition in Esperance, where renewable power and a decarbonised future is as important to the community as it to us

The future of energy is changing

We’re working with local communities to design ways to shift our traditional electricity systems towards renewable energy solutions. Along the way, we’re exploring options to help reduce the cost of your electricity and investing in a greener future for everyone.
